GRAYHAWK ELEMENTARY OUTDOOR CLASSROOM

The Grayhawk Elementary School Outdoor Classroom is a 10,000-square-foot educational space designed to enhance student learning while responding to the climate challenges of Phoenix, Arizona. A critical aspect of the design was solar analysis and sun angle studies, which ensured the outdoor classroom remained comfortable throughout the year.

Climate-Responsive Design Through Solar Studies

To create a comfortable microclimate, we conducted detailed solar studies that analyzed the sun’s path across different seasons. The following strategies were implemented based on these findings:

  1. Precise Sun Angle Analysis

    • Using solar path diagrams, we studied the azimuth and altitude angles of the sun at different times of the year to determine optimal shading strategies.

    • In summer, when the sun is high, vertical shading elements and angled pergolas block harsh direct sunlight.

    • In winter, when the sun is lower, the design allows passive solar heating, ensuring the space remains usable.

  2. Optimized Shade Structures

    • The orientation and placement of shade structures were informed by computational sun studies, ensuring they provide maximum shade during peak school hours.

    • We utilized angled slats and perforated panels that allow filtered daylight, reducing glare while maintaining a bright learning environment.

    • Deciduous trees were strategically placed to provide natural shade in summer while allowing sunlight in cooler months.

  3. Cooling Through Thermal Mass & Ventilation

    • Rammed earth and stone seating elements absorb heat during the day and release it at night, stabilizing temperature swings.

    • Openings were designed to promote cross-ventilation, utilizing prevailing winds to keep the space cooler.

  4. Photovoltaic Integration & Energy Awareness

    • Some structures were designed to accommodate solar panels, providing an opportunity for students to learn about renewable energy.

    • The orientation of panels was determined using precise solar modeling to maximize efficiency.

By incorporating solar studies and climate-responsive strategies, the Grayhawk Elementary Outdoor Classroom ensures a comfortable, energy-efficient learning space that serves as a living lab for sustainability education.
